2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid Drivetrain

One of the most efficient vehicles in the Ford lineup is the Ford C-Max Hybrid, as it employs an electric motor which works in tandem with a gasoline-powered engine to deliver some serious power and fuel efficiency ratings unlike any other Ford out there. Many of our customers here at Matt Ford are well-versed on some of the more popular Ford models such as the Mustang and F-150, but the C-Max Hybrid is not as common, so we thought it would be helpful to provide you with some information about it, beginning with a closer look at the 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid drivetrain.

Before we get into all the details, we thought it would probably be helpful to get to the information that you likely care about more than anything—the fuel economy ratings. The Ford C-Max Hybrid isn’t able to produce the same fuel economy ratings as the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid, but it’s not far behind at all. The 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid is capable of producing fuel economy ratings of 45 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. The ratings are slightly lower than the ratings of the Fusion Hybrid, which is capable of hitting 47 mpg in both cycles, but when you consider the price difference between the two vehicles, the gap in efficiency is justified.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the specifics of the C-Max Hybrid. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine and an electric motor which helps to take some of the workload, and also helps to slightly increase the power output of the C-Max Hybrid. While the four-cylinder runs on gas, the electric motor draws its power from the 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery.

The majority of the time the C-Max Hybrid operates with a combination of gas and electric power, but as the lithium-ion battery is capable of holding a lot of juice, the car can run strictly on electric power. Even when the electric motor is the only one in use, the 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid is able to reach a top speed of 85 mph. Compared to some of the other hybrids on the market these days, that’s quite impressive. When the engines are working in tandem, the C-Max Hybrid delivers 141 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the more powerful hybrids on the market.

In addition to engines and batteries, the C-Max Hybrid drivetrain consists of two other systems that help to increase its efficiency and extend its overall range. That includes an electronic continuously variable transmission, which eliminates the need for gears, helping to decrease friction and increase fuel economy. Another system employed in the C-Max Hybrid is a regenerative braking system, which collects kinetic energy typically lost during coasting and braking, and sends it to the battery to keep the electric motor running at all times.

As you can see, there are a lot of systems that make up the 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid drivetrain, and help the hybrid to deliver extreme power and efficiency.
