There has been a lot of hype surrounding the all-new Ford F-150 as the automaker announced that for the first time since the Ford F-Series release back in 1948, the truck body structure and steel frame will incorporate a large amount of aluminum. When most people think of aluminum, they think of a soda can, but we can assure you that the aluminum found on the 2015 Ford F-150 is much more durable than a soda can. The aluminum used on the truck uses high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloys which makes the F-150 just as durable as it has been in the past.

Ford chose to utilize aluminum on the new F-150 because it’s much more lightweight than the steel that has typically been found on the best-selling pickup. The aluminum body is roughly 700 pounds lighter which makes the pickup much more capable, effective and efficient. In addition, aluminum is much easier to recycle which allows Ford to minimize waste.

The Aluminum F-150 still relies on a great deal of steel for strength. The frame is constructed of 77 percent high-strength steel that has a total of eight cross sections, making the frame stronger and more rigid than it has ever been. There is also steel found on the body of the pickup. Sheets of steel are used throughout panels on the F-150 to provide a sound-absorbing firewall.

One of the biggest concerns about the switch to aluminum comes from those in areas with harsh winters. Salt and aluminum is like fire and water, but Ford has put the all-new body through rigorous tests in a variety of different temperatures and climates, including those that are thick with salt. You can rest assured that you have nothing to worry about with the aluminum body of the new F-150.

We will have more about this on the Matt Ford blog as time goes on, so be sure to check back for an update in the future.
