2015 Ford Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost Engine
The 2015 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated cars of the year, as it has been completely redesigned. It has been nearly 50 years since the first 1964 ½ Mustang has been released, and the redesign is Ford’s way of celebrating the milestone. If you’ve been keeping up with our latest blog posts on the Ford Mustang, you likely know that the Mustang will offer a four-cylinder engine under the hood for the first time since 1993. To help you learn more about all that the efficient and powerful engine will offer, we’ve decided to take a closer look at the 2015 Ford Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine.
Ford has been pretty tight-lipped about the specifics of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, and we have a feeling it may be in an effort to keep Chevy from using the information to make last minute adjustments to their 2016 Camaro which is expected to be released late next year. However, the automaker has released some estimates of the EcoBoost’s capabilities and from what we’re seeing, the 2015 Mustang will have no problem overpowering the Camaro.
According to Ford, the engine is projected to achieve more than 305 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque, which would make it about as powerful as the V6 engine that will come standard under the hood of the Mustang. The difference between the two engines is efficiency. Official ratings haven’t been released yet, but Ford claims that the projected fuel economy ratings of the smaller-displacement engine will be best-in-class.
As you can imagine, with such high projected numbers, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost will be turbocharged. It makes the four-cylinder the first Ford engine to utilize a twin-scroll turbocharger. According to Ford the turbocharger will provide “quicker boost response while enabling lower emissions and improved efficiency.” As the small engine will be pumping out such impressive power, there have also been a number of other systems added to the engine which will allow it to better handle the output.
The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine of the 2015 Ford Mustang will be available with two different transmissions. The manual transmission will provide smoother shifting and more of a sporty feel, but the automatic transmission will also be an appealing option as the 2015 model will be adding steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to control all six of the speeds.
The turbocharged four-cylinder is just one of three engines which will be offered in the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang. In addition to the 2.3-liter EcoBoost, both the V6 and the V8 of past models will be making a return. However, the 5.0-liter V8 has been refined to help increase its power output. Official numbers haven’t been released yet, but Ford says it will get more than the 420 horsepower that it has in the past.
