2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang Release Date
Just last week, Ford rolled out a number of vehicles in Detroit during the North American International Auto Show, and although the all-new GT and Raptor made quite the splash, the newest addition to the Shelby lineup drew a significant amount of attention as well. The latest GT350R is the most race-ready Mustang ever produced, and although it meets requirements for the road, the margin is thin, meaning that the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang is street legal, but just barely.
Perhaps the greatest news about the muscular new pony car is that it will be coming to production. It has been made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first road-racing Mustang, which was manufactured with the help of the late automotive designer Carroll Shelby back in 1965. As it will be released as sort of a milestone vehicle, the release date will arrive this year. We still don’t have any word on the exact date.
Unlike the GT and Raptor, both of which come equipped with turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engines, the powertrain of the GT350R makes all of its power naturally. It’s the first Ford engine to come with a flat-plane crankshaft, and the unique layout of the V8 helps to make the engine of the special-edition Mustang the most powerful naturally-aspirated production engine ever. It has the ability to produce “more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft of torque” according to Ford.
What separates the GT350R from other Mustangs, both past and present, is that a number of features on the inside have been pulled to reduce the overall weight. The air conditioning, stereo system, rear seats, trunk floorboard and carpet, backup camera and emergency tire sealer and inflator have all been pulled, helping to decrease the weight by about 130 pounds, which leaves more room for power and performance.
A welcome new addition to the GT350R is the all-new high-efficiency carbon fiber rear wing, which has been tacked onto the back of the Ford Mustang “in anticipation of competition.” The wing helps to move the vehicle’s center of pressure rearward, while improving downforce and lift balance. In short, it means that the pony car is more properly equipped for high speeds on the track.
If you are interested in getting yourself a set of keys to the limited-edition 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R, we encourage you to get in touch with us sooner rather than later. The Mustang will only be manufactured in low numbers, so coming across one may be difficult. It likely won’t be long before the official release date is announced and that orders for the GT350R begin, so be sure to contact us so that we can help to make sure you get your hands on one of the future models.
