Official 2016 Ford Explorer Release Date
It has been roughly five years since the Ford Explorer received any changes, and now that it has reached the middle of its cycle, it will be receiving a number of changes for the 2016 model year. What’s even more exciting, however, is that the official 2016 Ford Explorer release date has been made known, and it won’t be long before the facelifted Explorer hit the streets. Let’s take a closer look at the new SUV.
According to Ford, the release date of the Explorer will be this summer. That only gives us a few more months to wait. When the latest model hits dealerships nationwide, it will be made available in a number of different trims and with one of three engine options. Of all the new changes for the 2016 Ford Explorer, however, there is no arguing that the newest addition to the powertrain lineup is the most exciting news.
2016 Ford Explorer EcoBoost Turbo-Four Engine
Just last year, a brand-new EcoBoost engine debuted in the Mustang, and has quickly become one of the most popular of all the engines—even more so than the trusted V8—as it’s able to strike a balance of both power and fuel economy. For that reason, it comes as no surprise that the same 2.3-liter engine is finding its way into other Ford offerings, such as the all-new Ford Focus RS and, of course, the 2016 Explorer.
Seeing as the 2016 Ford Explorer is significantly larger than the Ford Mustang and Focus RS, it isn’t able to produce the same power outputs, but surprisingly, the numbers are not far off. When stuffed into the nose of the Explorer, the engine is able to generate as much as 270 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, which is not far off from the 290-horsepower and 255-lb-ft ratings of the 3.5-liter V6 available in the Explorer.
Ford has released the performance outputs of the EcoBoost-equipped Explorer, but we have yet to hear what the fuel economy ratings of the 2016 Ford Explorer will be. In the Mustang, the engine is able to go as far as 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, but, as we said, the Ford Explorer is much larger, which means that it may not be able to break the 30 mpg barrier, but we would imagine that its highway fuel economy ratings will be somewhere in the high twenties. We’ll have more on that in the near future.
If you are interested in learning more about the 2016 Ford Explorer fuel economy ratings, or just more about the new EcoBoost turbo-four engine of the facelifted SUV, we encourage you to check back here on the Matt Ford blog, as we will be sure to provide you with all of the details as soon as they are made known. In the meantime, be sure to check out our new car inventory where you can find all of the new 2015 Ford Explorer models that we have in stock. As we said, we’ll have the 2016 model this summer.
