2015 Ford Explorer Performance Specs
There are a great deal of Ford vehicles that have been redesigned for the 2015 model year, but the Ford Explorer is not one of them. That’s not to say that the popular SUV is outdated, however. It has been in its fifth generation since 2011, but in the last couple of years, the automaker has brought a number of updates to the Explorer to keep it relevant, something that can be seen with a closer look at the 2015 Ford Explorer performance specs and features.
One of the many benefits of the 2015 Ford Explorer is that it is unique—unique in the sense that it can seamlessly transition from city and roads and highways to more unconventional roads and treacherous trails without a hitch. It takes its sport-utility vehicle classification seriously, and goes above and beyond in a number of different areas. You’ll also be sure to appreciate that the Ford Explorer comes with the choice of three different engines—all of which are able to adapt to a variety of conditions.
The most powerful of the engines is a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which comes standard in the higher-end Sport trim of the SUV. The engine comes turbocharged which allows it to achieve power outputs of 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, yet even power numbers typically only produced by V8 engines, the EcoBoost is able to achieve V6-like fuel economy numbers. When equipped with the engine, the Explorer is able to travel up to 22 mpg highway, which is quite impressive for such a large SUV.
If you can do without the extreme power and are interested in the Explorer simply for its appealing style and unmatched size, you’ll find that the available 2.0-liter EcoBoost is the engine option better suited for your needs. Although it only displaces two liters across four cylinders, it comes turbocharged, allowing it to pump out a substantial amount of power. The four-cylinder EcoBoost produces 240 horsepower, but is still able to return best-in-class fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
Right in the middle of the engines is the 3.5-liter V6, which is able to strike more of a balance between performance and efficiency. At 290 horsepower, it’s more powerful than the 2.0-liter, but it’s not as efficient. The six-cylinder, which comes standard in the base model, gets ratings of 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway when properly equipped, and although it doesn’t utilize EcoBoost technology, there’s no arguing that the engine is still quite impressive.
