2017 Ford Raptor 10-Speed Automatic Transmission Benefits
With fuel economy restrictions set to change the automotive market, Ford has been making a serious push to increase the fuel economy ratings of their vehicles. They are one of the few automakers that are getting a head start, and not surprisingly, Ford is focusing on increasing the efficiency of their most notorious fuel gulpers: the vehicles in their pickup lineup. Just last year, they rolled out their new aluminum body, but they are taking it a step further with a new transmission that is sure to ramp up efficiency ratings even higher.
When Ford pulled the sheet off of the all-new Raptor in Detroit earlier this year, they announced that the high-performance off-road pickup truck would be getting the aluminum body that we just mentioned, as well as a new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and an efficient 10-speed transmission. The powertrain was one of the most crucial announcements, but with a closer examination of the 2017 Ford Raptor 10-speed automatic transmission benefits, it’s clear to see that the new gearbox will be another welcome addition.
Most of the vehicles on the market come with a five- or six-speed transmission, and just recently, more advanced seven- and eight-speed gearboxes began to make their way to the market. If you are familiar with transmissions, you likely know about the advantages that can come from extra gears, but for those who may not be too knowledgeable in the subject, allow us to break down the benefits of the gears.
By having extra gears, there are more ratios that the vehicles is able to achieve. This means that the vehicle is able to enhance its capabilities in a number of areas. For example, with so many gears to work with, the lower ones can be specifically designated to provide better low-end performance in areas such as acceleration and towing, while the higher gears can be used to increase fuel economy at coasting speeds.
As you would expect, the efficiency-increasing and performance-enhancing new transmission will also be making its way to the other pickups in the Ford lineup. There is still no word of what the gearbox will do for the Raptor, and for that reason we’re not quite sure how it will benefit the standard Ford F-150, but we imagine that it will be able to do quite a bit for the pickup. We should learn more about all of that soon.
