Ford is an automaker that takes a lot of pride in their performance heritage. There have been a lot of historic moments in Ford racing history, however, none are of more significance than the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966 where Ford GT40’s took the top three spots in victory lane. We are coming up on the 50th anniversary of that historic race, and Ford is celebrating it by making a bold return to endurance racing next year with a next-generation Ford GT. Therefore, in this blog post we will be taking a look at the 2017 Le Mans Ford GT racecar.

2017 Le Mans 2017 GT RacecarFord shocked the world when they unveiled the consumer version of their next-generation 2017 Ford GT at the Detroit Auto Show last January. Most automotive enthusiasts also assumed that this unveiling meant that Ford would eventually make a triumphant return to endurance racing at the historic 24 Hours of Le Mans, and they were right. Many of the top executives were on hand at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans event this year, and that is where they officially announced that Ford would be returning to the event next year and showed off the racecar.

Unfortunately, Ford was rather vague about the details of this new endurance racing 2017 Ford GT. However, many experts believe that it will be surprisingly similar to the consumer version of the 2017 Ford GT. That means that it will probably feature the revolutionary new 3.5-liter, EcoBoost, six-cylinder that was developed in collaboration with Roush-Yates.

According to Ford Executive Chairman, Bill Ford, “When the GT40 competed at Le Mans in the 1960s, Henry Ford II sought to prove Ford could beat endurance racing’s most legendary manufacturers.” He went on to say, “We are still extremely proud of having won this iconic race four times in a row, and that same spirit that drove the innovation behind the first Ford GT still drives us today.”
