Compressed Natural Gas/Propane-Powered 2016 Ford F-150
For the last five years, Ford has offered a gaseous engine-prep package that allows their vehicles to run on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane, two fuel sources that can help to save a great deal of money at the pumps. In the first year, the automaker sold just over 4,000 of the commercial vehicles, but numbers have more than quadrupled since then, and this year is shaping up to be an even stronger year. For that reason, Ford is expanding their CNG- and propane-capable lineup by bringing in the 2016 F-150.
The compressed natural gas/propane-powered 2016 Ford F-150 is in response to the outpour of requests that have flooded the automaker since it was announced that the pickup would be getting an aluminum body. When it arrives later this year, it will be the only CNG/propane-capable half-ton pickup available. No other automakers have even attempted to bring the gas-converting technology to their trucks at this point.
Seeing as the gaseous engine-prep package is intended for commercial use, it comes as no surprise that it will only be available with the 5.0-liter V8 engine, which is the largest and most powerful of all the engine options offered under the hood of the truck. To ensure that the engine performs to the strict standards set in place by the automaker, there will also be an upgraded intake and exhaust valves and valve seats.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first Ford F-150 to be outfitted with the CNG/propane package. Most recently, the 2014 Ford F-150 was made available with the technology, and although it quickly became one of the more popular options, the latest 2016 model is bound to be even more impressive as it will be paired to the V8 engine that we just mentioned. The 2014 model of the Ford F-150 had a 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The increased capabilities of the larger engine are especially exciting as the gaseous engine-prep package does not take anything away from the capabilities of the pickup. 2016 models of the Ford F-150 running on either CNG or propane will be able to tow and haul the exact same amount. The only difference is a slight cut to the total payload as the installed system adds a slight bit of additional weight to the pickup truck.
