5 Things You Didn’t Know About the 2015 Ford Mustang

The 2015 Ford Mustang is set to arrive this fall, and there’s no arguing that it’s one of the most anticipated models to be released this year. We’ve been spending a great deal of time telling you about all that the 2015 Ford Mustang will be capable of, but we thought that we would get into some of the lesser-known facts about the iconic pony car. If you’re a die-hard Mustang fan, some of these may be common knowledge to you, but for those who are just now discovering the all-new sports car, here are 5 things you didn’t know about the 2015 Ford Mustang:

1. It’s 50 Years Old

The Ford Mustang first hit the market back in April of 1964, which means that it’s officially 50 years old. It’s for this reason that Ford decided to completely redesign the iconic car for the 2015 model year. The automaker also released a 50 Year Limited Edition model to celebrate the occasion which is available in Wimbledon White—the color of the first 1964 Ford Mustang.

The 2015 Ford Mustang will be available in 10 different colors, some of which have been available for years, some of which will be resurrected and some of which are brand new. One of the most popular colors will likely be Triple Yellow, which hasn’t been available on the Mustang since 2006. The newest colors include Magnetic and Guard, both of which are based on Ford’s Ingot Silver color.

In addition to Triple Yellow, Magnetic and Guard, the Ford Mustang will be available in Race Red, Competition Orange, Deep Impact Blue, Ruby Red, Black, Ingot Silver and Oxford White.

3. It’s Not as Heavy as Rumored

When details of the redesigned Ford Mustang were first released, it was rumored that the new model was going to be putting on a great deal of weight—roughly 300 pounds to be exact. It turns out that the actual gain is far more modest. Depending on the model and configuration, the 2015 Ford Mustang packs on anywhere from two to 90 pounds, which is sure to make Mustang enthusiasts happy.

The lightest of the models will be the V6-equipped Convertible which will be two pounds more than the 2014 Mustang, while the heaviest will be the GT Convertible, which will add 90 pounds to the overall weight when equipped with a manual transmission.

4. It’s Getting a Four-Cylinder

It’s been over two decades since Ford has stuck a four-cylinder in the nose of the Mustang, but as the automaker has been making such a serious push for increased fuel economy, it comes as no surprise that they’re bringing one back. Ford projects that the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine will pump out 305 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque, which makes it slightly more powerful than the 300-horsepower base V6 engine.

As we told you when looking at the official 2015 Ford Mustang pricing, the price for the four-cylinder-equipped Mustang is only $1,570 more than the base V6-equipped model, which likely means that the new engine will be the most popular of the three powertrain options.

The 2015 Ford Mustang has been popping up at auto shows all around the world, but arguably its most notable appearance was in the new Need for Speed movie that came out in March. Ford managed to sneak it into the movie undetected. During filming, the design of the new Mustang was still a secret, but Ford was careful and ensured no one on set found out that the model used for filming was the redesigned pony car.

We’re sure that it will be starring in a few other movies this year, but to see the pony car in its debut role, be sure to keep an eye out for it in Need for Speed which will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on August 5th.
