How Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter Technology Works

Over on the other side of the pond, Ford just unveiled a new feature of their multi-purpose S-Max that is gaining a great deal of attention all over the world. The feature is an Intelligent Speed Limiter that keeps the vehicle from going any faster than the speed limit of the road allows. It all sounds quite restricting, but the speed limiter technology can be switched off whenever you want to control speed on your own.

It’s worth nothing that the speed limiter is only being introduced in Europe at this point. That’s because the country has more than 35,000 safety cameras—a number that continues to rise. With an ever-increasing number of cameras watching the roads, drivers need to pay extra attention to their speed to avoid costly speeding tickets. With the new speed-limiting system, however, driver’s can be much more relaxed.

The system is ingenious, and although there hasn’t been any word on whether or not it will make its way to the U.S., we have a feeling that we could be seeing the feature quite soon. For that reason, we thought it would be helpful to take a closer look at exactly how Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter technology works.

Vehicles that are equipped with the system have a camera that is mounted on the inside of the windshield. The camera scans road signs on the side of the highway and ensures that the vehicle is traveling at the legal speed at all times. If the road goes from 30 mph down to 25 mph, the vehicle knows, and is able to adjust speed accordingly. It is a simple solution to what has become a growing problem in Europe.

There are a lot of people who believe that the speed limiter is always on, and cannot be shut off, but as we said earlier, if the driver wants to take control of the speed, they have the ability to do so. The system can be turned off with the touch of a button, but it can also be temporarily disabled by pressing the gas pedal, so if you only need a burst of speed, you can get it and be back in compliance in a matter of seconds.

You can learn a bit more about why the system was created, and how the automaker expects it to change that way that we drive. If you want to know whether or not the system will be making its way to the states, be sure to check back here on the Matt Ford blog. We will be sure to provide you with an update as soon as more information about the speed-limiting system is made available.
