How to Find a Great Mechanic in Kansas City MO
All good things come to an end. Unfortunately, this is true for your repair shop. Maybe you moved to a new city, the shop you went to for 10 years is closing, or your favorite mechanic retired. Sometimes it’s time to move to greener pastures, as much as you’ll miss that new tire smell of the old shop. No matter your situation, here are a few tips on how to find a great mechanic in Kansas City MO.
Word of mouth: This is probably one of the best ways to find a mechanic. It’s nice to get recommendations firsthand and be able to ask lots of questions of current customers. Friends and family who have lived in the area for awhile can provide great insight.
Search online: There are a variety of online lists of great and not so great repair shops. Edmunds.com has a dealership directory that covers reviews of auto repair shops across the country. RepairPal is another great, free online list of mechanics and is available online and in an app for your smartphone. Check out our review of it here.
Let the car brand guide you: Find shops that specialize in your car’s brand and you’ll find shops that are likely more familiar with issues with that type of car and will have the latest training to approach those issues most successfully.
Look for certification: Ask your mechanic about certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The ASE is a nonprofit organization that certifies automotive technicians, not auto shops, and requires technicians to have so many years of job training, pass an exam and retest every five years to stay certified.
Start with small tasks: It’s always better to try and find a new mechanic before you have major car issues. If you’re still not sure what shop you want to go to, test out a shop with small repairs first. Oil changes and other small maintenance checks are a good way to get a feel for how the shop operates.
