What is the most powerful Ford engine ever?

It’s easy to forget about horsepower in this day and age. After all, automakers don’t hide the fact that they are on a quest toward efficiency. But don’t be fooled, there are still plenty of engineers out there that are focused on getting the most out of an engine. A supreme example of this is the new 5.2-liter Flat-Plane V-8 that will be introduced on the new Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang. This monster gets an amazing 526 horsepower. So if you’re wondering what the most powerful engine is that Ford has ever produced, you’ve found your answer.

As a qualifier, we will state that the new 5.2-liter V-8 will make the Shelby GT350 the most powerful naturally aspirated road-going engine in the company’s storied history. The naturally aspirated part is more a disclaimer than anything, as this engine is truly a beast. In addition to the 526 horsepower, it also has output of 429 lb-ft of torque.

In addition to being included on the Shelby GT350 Mustang, it will also appear on the slightly different Shelby GT350R. The engine was specifically designed to get the absolute most out of every liter of displacement – with more than 100 horsepower output per liter. And unlike the old days, the technicians at Ford had the help of the most advanced equipment to run the engine through digital performance simulations prior to unleashing it, and the car, to the public.

This is all great, but how exactly did Ford get so much performance out of one engine? A large chunk of the complex answer comes from the flat-plane construction of the engine. A traditional cross-plane crankshaft V-8 have the connecting rods go to the crankshaft at 90-degree intervals. In the 5.2-liter V-8, there is a flat-plane that aligns them at 180 degree intervals. This allows a change in the firing order between the cylinder banks, improving on the way the engine breaths, making it more powerful.

All of this results in one awesome engine – Ford’s most powerful ever. Needless to say, we are more than interested in getting our hands on this one.
