Will the 2017 Ford Raptor Get a V8 Engine?
When the Ford Raptor first hit the market for the 2014 model year, it was regarded for its unique look, but more so for its impressive power and performance. The 6.2-liter V8 engine produced an exhilarating output of 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque, giving it the ability to tackle just about any off-road terrain with ease. Despite its popularity, however, the eight-cylinder is not poised to make a return when the redesigned Ford Raptor arrives next fall.
There have been quite a few questions about whether or not the 2017 Ford Raptor will get a V8 engine so we thought that we would address them. The simple answer, which is sure to be a bit of a disappointment to some, is that the Ford Raptor will not come equipped with a V8 engine. Instead the powertrain will take on just six cylinders. This does not mean that it’s any less impressive, however.
Thanks to EcoBoost technology, which continues to find its way into just about every Ford model on the market, V6 engines are able to do just as much as V8 engines. In essence, EcoBoost engines are nothing more than turbocharged engines with less cylinders. This allows vehicles with four-cylinder engines to produce impressive, four-cylinder-like fuel economy ratings while still being able to produce V6-like power outputs, and for V6 engines to produce numbers usually only achieved by V8s.
So, although the 2017 Ford Raptor will not get a V8 engine, it will get one that is just as good. Ratings for the turbocharged V6 engine have yet to be announced, but according to Ford, they will be even larger than the ratings that the V8 of the past was capable of producing. That would, of course, mean that the 2017 Ford Raptor will generate more than 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque.
If you are interested in learning more about the 2017 Ford Raptor and the output of its upcoming new EcoBoost V6 engine, we encourage you to check back here on the Matt Ford blog, as we will be sure to provide you with an update as soon as we hear more. Keep in mind that the release date of the 2017 Ford Raptor won’t be arriving until fall of 2016, however, so it could still be a while before we hear more specifics about the high-performance off-road pickup.
